I have been drawing and painting seriously since the 1970’s. I have exhibited in local venues and in several out of state exhibits, the latter as a member of the American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA). ASAA is an organization I was instrumental in forming when I organized a forum of aviation artists at the University of Virginia in 1983. I was a founding member of Art Upstairs in Charlottesville and had three one-man exhibitions there. While aviation has been an impulse in much of my own art, I have also focused on dog art, being a dog-lover by nature and owner of many dachshunds, a Pembroke corgi, and a border collie over the years. Lately I have been experimenting with floral scenes. I think of myself as a realist artist and have created only a few abstract pieces in the past thirty-some years. I have no illusions about ever making much money as an artist. What keeps me producing art is the sheer pleasure I get from planning and executing a work. In most of my work I find I get to a point where the painting is beginning to establish its own set of rules, and I just follow what the work is dictating. This is particularly true when it comes to choosing colors. |
